Tuesday works: Coal Battle drills ahead of Indiana Derby start

Coal Battle, last seen finishing third in the Grade 3 Matt Winn, breezed three furlongs in 38.0 seconds Tuesday at Churchill Downs.

Winner of the Rebel Stakes (G2) and 11th in the Kentucky Derby, Coal Battle is entered in Saturday's Indiana Derby (G3) at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Trained by Lonnie Briley, the Coal Front colt has a 10: 5-0-2 record and earnings of $1.2 millon.

Coal Battle was one of six graded-stakes winners with published works Tuesday.

Get Her Number (Dialed In), a Grade 1 winner (2020 American Pharoah), worked four furlongs in 48.8 seconds at Churchill Training on Tuesday morning. It was the faster of two works at the distance. His previous work was 13 days ago going four furlongs at Churchill Training. In his last start he placed fourth in a claiming race going 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track at Churchill Downs on June 6 for trainer Peter Miller.

Simply in Front (Summer Front), a two-time Grade 2 winner (2025 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile, 2024 Music City), worked four furlongs in 50.0 seconds at Churchill Downs on Tuesday morning. It was the 10th fastest of 13 works at the distance. Her previous work was nine days ago going four furlongs at Churchill Downs. In her last start she placed fifth in the Just a Game (G1) going one mile on the turf at Saratoga on June 6 for trainer Eddie Kenneally.

Coal Battle (Coal Front), a Grade 2 winner (2025 Rebel), worked three furlongs in 38.0 seconds at Churchill Downs on Tuesday morning. It was the only work at the distance. His previous work was six days ago going four furlongs at Churchill Downs. In his last start he placed third in the Matt Winn (G3) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Churchill Downs on June 8 for trainer Lonnie Briley.

Utah Beach (English Channel), a Grade 2 winner (2025 Elkhorn), worked four furlongs in 49.4 seconds at Keeneland on Tuesday morning. It was the 45th fastest of 63 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed seventh in the Chorleywood going 1 3/8 miles on the turf at Churchill Downs on June 14 for trainer Ignacio Correas.

How Did He Do That (Good Magic), a Grade 3 winner (2023 Oklahoma Derby), worked four furlongs in 50.8 seconds at Louisiana Downs on Tuesday morning. It was the 35th fastest of 51 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed ninth in an allowance race going one mile on the main track at Lone Star Park on June 14 for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Zoffarelli (Zoffany), a Grade 3 winner (2021 La Jolla Handicap), worked four furlongs in 48.8 seconds at San Luis Rey on Tuesday morning. It was the sixth fastest of nine works at the distance. His previous work was six days ago going four furlongs at San Luis Rey. In his last start he placed ninth in an allowance race going five furlongs on the turf at Del Mar on Sept. 6 for trainer Peter Miller.
