Tuesday works: Chunk of Gold fires a bullet, leads 7 on tab
Chunk of Gold, winner of the Grade 3 West Virginia Derby last out, fired a bullet Tuesday ahead of an expected start in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1) on Sept. 20.
The 3-year-old Preservationist colt breezed four furlongs in 47.4 seconds on the Turfway Park synthetic track for trainer Ethan West, fastest of 26 at the distance.
Chunk of Gold won his December debut but was winless in his first five starts this year. Runner-up efforts in the Risen Star (G2) and Louisiana Derby (G2) qualified him for the Kentucky Derby, where he finished ninth. He then was second in the Ohio Derby (G3) before his win at Mountaineer.

Kopion (Omaha Beach), a two-time Grade 1 winner (2025 Derby City Distaff, 2024 La Brea), worked four furlongs in 48.6 seconds at Del Mar on Tuesday morning. It was the fourth fastest of seven works at the distance. Her previous work was eight days ago going three furlongs at Del Mar. In her last start she placed second in the Clement L. Hirsch (G1) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Del Mar on Aug. 2 for trainer Richard Mandella.
Big City Lights (Mr. Big), a Grade 3 winner (2024 Palos Verdes), worked three furlongs in 38.4 seconds at Del Mar on Tuesday morning. It was the fourth fastest of five works at the distance. His previous work was six days ago going two furlongs at Del Mar. In his last start he won the Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint going six furlongs on the main track at Santa Anita on Jan. 18 for trainer Richard Mandella.

Dontlookbackatall (Peace and Justice), a Grade 3 winner (2024 Caress), worked four furlongs in 50.2 seconds at Belmont Park on Tuesday morning. It was the 18th fastest of 21 works at the distance. This was her first work since her last race. In her last start she placed second in the Smart And Fancy going 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf at Saratoga on Aug. 15 for trainer Miguel Clement.
Masen (Kingman), a Grade 3 winner (2022 Poker), worked four furlongs in 48.0 seconds at Hastings on Tuesday morning. It was the only work at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed sixth in the Longacres Mile going one mile on the main track at Emerald Downs on Aug. 17 for trainer Craig MacPherson.
