Tuesday tab: Coal Battle gets back to work after Kentucky Derby

Coal Battle recorded his first timed workout on Tuesday following his 11th place finish in the Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs, covering four furlongs at Churchill Downs in 48.2 seconds.

The move by the son of War Front, trained by longtime Louisiana horseman Lonnie Briley, was the 12th fastest of 32 works at the distance.

Briley has not yet indicated where the colt, winner of the Rebel Stakes (G2) and three other listed stakes, will make his next start.

Coal Battle was one of eight graded-stakes winners recording timed workouts on Tuesday. The others were: 

Idratherbeblessed (Unified), a Grade 2 winner (2025 Muniz Memorial Classic), worked four furlongs in 50.2 seconds on turf at Churchill Downs on Tuesday morning. It was the fourth fastest of six works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going four furlongs at Churchill Downs. In his last start he placed 10th in the Elkhorn (G2) going 1 1/2 miles on the turf at Keeneland on April 19 for trainer Chris Hartman.

Kehoe Beach (Omaha Beach), a Grade 2 winner (2024 Mrs. Revere), worked five furlongs in 1:02.2 on turf at Churchill Downs on Tuesday morning. It was the slower of two works at the distance. Her previous work was seven days ago going five furlongs at Churchill Downs. In her last start she placed third in the Jenny Wiley (G1) going 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Keeneland on April 12 for trainer Wesley Ward.

Minaret Station (Instilled Regard), a Grade 2 winner (2024 Bourbon), worked four furlongs in 50.2 seconds at Keeneland on Tuesday morning. It was the 52nd fastest of 67 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going three furlongs at Keeneland. In his last start he won the Bourbon (G2) going 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Keeneland on Oct. 6 for trainer Will Walden.

Utah Beach (English Channel), a Grade 2 winner (2025 Elkhorn), worked four furlongs in 49.6 seconds at Keeneland on Tuesday morning. It was the 45th fastest of 67 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going five furlongs at Keeneland. In his last start he won the Elkhorn (G2) going 1 1/2 miles on the turf at Keeneland on April 19 for trainer Ignacio Correas.

Background (Khozan), a Grade 3 winner (2021 Longacres Mile Handicap), worked four furlongs in 51.8 seconds at Louisiana Downs on Tuesday morning. It was the 52nd fastest of 60 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed fifth in a claiming race going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Oaklawn on March 8 for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Pipsy (Kodiac), a Grade 3 winner (2024 Soaring Softly), worked four furlongs in 50.4 seconds on turf at Churchill Downs on Tuesday morning. It was the fifth fastest of six works at the distance. Her previous work was seven days ago going four furlongs at Churchill Downs. In her last start she won an allowance race going 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf at Keeneland on April 19 for trainer Will Walden.

Yo Yo Candy (Danzing Candy), a Grade 3 winner (2023 Sanford), worked four furlongs in 47.7 seconds at Parx Racing on Tuesday morning. It was the second fastest of 32 works at the distance. His previous work was 17 days ago going five furlongs at Parx Racing. In his last start he placed eighth in a starter allowance race going seven furlongs on the main track at Parx Racing on March 17 for trainer Daniel Velazquez.
