Tropical meet at Calder set to begin

Calder Race Course concluded the live racing portion of its 101-day Calder meet on Sunday and remains open for simulcasting on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before starting its 51-day Tropical meet on Thursday.

The 2010 Calder meet was highlighted by its annual cornerstone events, the Summit of Speed (July 10) and Festival of the Sun (October 16). BIG DRAMA (Montbrook) and JESSICA IS BACK (Put It Back) won memorable renewals of the Smile Sprint (G2) and Princess Rooney H. (G1), respectively, on Summit of Speed day, earning automatic berths to the Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs.

At the Festival of the Sun program on Saturday, AWESOME FEATHER (Awesome of Course) completed a sweep of the filly division of the Florida Stallion S., only the third time in the 29-year history of the program.

Leading the 2010 Calder Meet jockey standings was Luis Saez with 142 wins, after a hotly contested, season-long competition with Manoel Cruz, who finished second in the standings with 130. Finishing third in the standings with 76 wins was Angel Moreno.
