Triple Crown tracker: Sierra Leone leads alumni in action
The Triple Crown Tracker checks in with the horses who raced in the 2024 Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont, keeping up with what they have done since the classics.
2024 Kentucky Derby
Two entrants from the most recent Kentucky Derby have raced in recent weeks.
Saturday, Sierra Leone made his first start of his 4-year-old season in the Grade 2 New Orleans Classic. The Chad Brown charge was bet down to 3-10 favoritism off of his victory in the Breeders' Cup Classic, but the race scratched down to a field of five and Touchuponastar was allowed to set a comfortable pace. Touchuponastar went on to win by 2 1/2 lengths over the stalking Hall of Fame, leaving Sierra Leone to settle for third.
Encino, who won two races at Turfway as a 3-year-old, returned to the starting gate in Florence, Ky., on Saturday for the Kentucky Cup Classic (G3). Bet as the 7-2 second favorite in the 12-horse field for trainer Brad Cox, he set the pace and fought down the lane when Mercante bore down. But Mercante got the best of him late, leaving Encino to finish second by a length.

In the Oaklawn Mile, he drew post 4 in an eight-horse field and has been named a 15-1 long shot on the morning line.
