Team Parboo, or Parbhoo, depending on who you talk with, will give Trinniberg an opportunity to defend his title in the $1.5 million Xpressbet Breeders’ Cup Sprint at six furlongs on Nov. 2.

The 4-year-old Kentucky-bred colt barely drew a deep breath when finishing seventh and last behind victorious Points Offthebench in the Grade I Santa Anita Sprint Championship on Oct. 5, 22 ¼ lengths behind the winner.

It was the first race for the dark bay son of Teuflesberg in three months, when he finished second in the Grade II Smile Sprint Handicap at Calder last July 6.

Trinniberg worked a half-mile on Santa Anita’s main track Friday in a bullet 46.60, fastest of 21 drills at the distance, the average time of which was 48.46.

“It was a very nice work, without the whip,” said Bisnath Parboo, who trains Trinniberg for his granddaughter, Sherry Parbhoo. She races as Sherry Racing, Inc. “We had to put a lip chain on to walk him after the work, he was so full of himself.”

Sherry explained the one letter difference in the spelling of their last names. “When my grandfather came to this country and went through the immigration process, his last name was misspelled,” she said. “The ‘H’ was omitted.”

Asked about the colt’s disappointing performance in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship, Parboo was still mystified.

“I don’t know why,” Parboo said. “Jose (Valdivia Jr., who rode Trinniberg in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship) said after he broke from the gate, he was finished, but I can’t understand it.” Valdivia concurred. “I’m baffled,” he said after the race.

Still, Parbhoo and Parboo are not ready to throw in the towel.

“He deserves another chance in the Breeders’ Cup,” the trainer said.
