Trevor Denman will return to Del Mar to call summer meet

Trevor Denman, the longtime announcer at Del Mar, will return to the Southern California track for its summer meet, which begins July 21 and runs through Sept. 10.

Denman has been the regular announcer at Del Mar since 1984, though he took time off during the pandemic because he didn't want to risk his and his wife's health by traveling. In October 2021, Denman suffered a back injury and was unable to call the track's fall meeting. In both cases, he was replaced by Larry Collmus.

After calling for Del Mar last summer, Denman decided not to travel for the track's fall meet.

"He does not fly, he and his wife prefer not to fly at all, so anywhere they need to go, they drive," said Mac McBride, director of media for Del Mar. "And of course they live in Minnesota. So the drive to Del Mar, it's a little less than 2,000 miles."

Last year, he opted to avoid that second road trip, and the track signed on Collmus.

McBride isn't sure whether Denman will want to stay for the fall meet. If he doesn't, "I think we'll go hunting Larry Collmus one more time."
