Travers Stakes: Who has the fastest speed figures?
Essential Quality will be favored in a talented field for Saturday's Grade 1 Travers Stakes and rightly so. The speed figures he earned winning the Belmont Stakes tower over any of his challengers in the race. But the Belmont Stakes was at a mile-and-a-half. Will he be able to duplicate those lofty speed figures at 1 1/8 miles?
Looking at the competition, none of the other six likely Travers starters have gotten close to Essential Quality's top Beyer figure or Brisnet speed rating. But on TimeformUS, Midnight Bourbon, Masqueparade and Keepmeinmind all are in the 120s, a little closer to Essential Quality's 127.
[Travers analysis: 2 horses who can upset Essential Quality]
For the Jim Dandy (G2), where Essential Quality suffered a wide trip and beat Keepmeinmind by only a half-length, the two received similar speed figures. Essential Quality got a 98 and 121 from Beyer and TimeformUS, and Keepmeinmind got a 97 and 120.
So the question may be, can Essential Quality run to his Belmont figures at this distance?
Below are the lifetime best speed figures for each of the likely Travers starters.
