Bolo, a veteran of the 2015 Kentucky Derby and winner of last year's Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita, has been retired, trainer Carla Gaines announced on Twitter Tuesday.
“He is happy, healthy and sound,” Gaines said in the post. “He just doesn’t seem interested in racing anymore. Now eight, he’s been a part of our barn since he was two, his absences is going to leave a huge void, both his talent and larger than life personality.”
Besides the Shoemaker Mile, Bolo also won the 2017 Arcadia Stakes (G2) and 2014 Eddie Logan Stakes, both at Santa Anita, for owner Golden Pegasus Racing. The 8-year-old gelding has been well beaten in four starts since last year's Shoemaker Mile, which includes finishing ninth in both the American Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita in June and most recently the July 11 Wickerr Stakes at Del Mar.
Gaines continued to praise of the son of Temple City in the statement.
“He took me to my first Kentucky Derby,” Gaines wrote. “The back to back Arcadia wins, G1 Shoemaker at the age of seven… the memories are endless.”
Bolo finished 12th in the 2015 Kentucky Derby. He retires with a record of 23: 6-1-4 with earnings of $978,572. Gaines said that future plans for the gelding are "being considered but undecided at this point."
