Track Trends: Favorites win less; Belmont anticipation grows
After consecutive weeks where favorites were successful at a 40 percent win rate or higher, opportunities increased for horseplayers from the week of May 23-30.
Chalk was victorious 36.7 percent of the time, a welcome decrease from prior results. More total races were contested at 794 in comparison to the previous week’s 757. The average field size of 6.8 runners remained the same.
Favorites were highly reliable at Canterbury Park on the main track throughout the second week of the meet, winning at a 53.8 percent clip. Turf racing was less formful. The public pick was successful 33.3 percent of the time on the grass with a healthy average field size of 8.4.

On the main track at Lone Star favorites won 22.2 percent of the time and only 11.1 percent of the time on the grass. At Monmouth, favorites were successful on the dirt 14.3 percent of the time. The turf was a no-chalk zone out of 10 contested grass races.
