Track Trends: Favorites win less; Belmont anticipation grows

After consecutive weeks where favorites were successful at a 40 percent win rate or higher, opportunities increased for horseplayers from the week of May 23-30.

Chalk was victorious 36.7 percent of the time, a welcome decrease from prior results. More total races were contested at 794 in comparison to the previous week’s 757. The average field size of 6.8 runners remained the same.

Favorites were highly reliable at Canterbury Park on the main track throughout the second week of the meet, winning at a 53.8 percent clip. Turf racing was less formful. The public pick was successful 33.3 percent of the time on the grass with a healthy average field size of 8.4.

As anticipation builds for the Belmont Stakes, bettors seemed to have a handle on how to play the main track, where favorites won 40 percent of the time. The inner turf was the surface for upsets with chalk finding the winner’s circle in 2 of 7. The outer turf was most kind to the public pick with half of the favorites over six contested races getting the win. Tracks that proved difficult for horseplayers to navigate regardless of surface were both Monmouth Park and Lone Star Park.

On the main track at Lone Star favorites won 22.2 percent of the time and only 11.1 percent of the time on the grass. At Monmouth, favorites were successful on the dirt 14.3 percent of the time. The turf was a no-chalk zone out of 10 contested grass races.

Power Picks are available every day of racing for all tracks, including Monmouth and Lone Star.
