Toast of New York retired and will stand in Qatar
One of British Racing’s heroes, Toast of New York, owned by Al Shaqab Racing, has been retired and will stand in Qatar in 2016.
Toast of New York gave Jamie Osborne the most valuable winner of his career, when showing raw talent with a stunning victory, to win the Gr2 UAE Derby at Meydan in March 2014. The strong, talented colt, finished second in the Pacific Classic Gr1 before producing a brave performance when beaten only a nose by Bayern in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic. While preparing for a clash with California Chrome in the Dubai World Cup Toast of New York sustained an injury which ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
Nasser Al Kaabi, General Manager of QREC, commented "Toast of New York was a fantastic racehorse and it is sad that his career was cut short but we are obviously delighted that he will be standing as a stallion in Qatar. He will be managed by the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club. Toast of New York will further enhance our evolving breeding industry.”
Jamie Osborne, trainer, commented: “Toast’s retirement from racing has brought down the curtain on a wonderfully exciting and rewarding adventure for me and my team. He was a talented and charismatic race horse who has given life long memories to so many.
As his trainer, I owe a debt of gratitude to a multitude of people: from his breeder Jackie Ramos, Paul Shanahan and Timmy Hyde from whom he was bought as a yearling, Michael Buckley for the initial leap of faith and to my assistant Jimmy McCarthy who has been married to Toast for the past three years.
I would like to also thank Veterinary surgeon, Duncan Moir for his recent tireless efforts and of course His Highness Sheikh Johan and all of the Al Shaqab team for being so supportive of our attempt to bring him back to the racecourse.
It has been a honour to have been the overseer of Toast’s racing career. I am sure he will relish his new occupation and I wish him and his new guardians the best of luck with the next chapter of this wonderful horse’s life.”
