Tizgale Looks to Bounce Back in Sunset

Sagamore Farm’s Tizgale will seek to return to her winning ways at Gulfstream Park Sunday in the $60,000 Sunset, a five-furlong overnight handicap for fillies and mares on the turf.
The 4-year-old daughter of Stormy Atlantic, who won back-to-back races in her first two starts over the Gulfstream turf during the 2013-14 Championship Meet, has finished fourth with less-than-ideal trips in back-to-back races in her two most recent starts.
After enduring a very troubled trip in a Jan. 25 allowance, the Sagamore homebred didn’t fare much better in the Captiva Island Handicap on March 18. She got away from the gate slowly and settled off a blazing early pace before swinging five-wide on the turn and finishing evenly.
Tizgale made her first start for trainer Joe Orseno in the Captiva Island.
“They were going really fast and she got bogged down in there. She really didn’t have a chance,” said Orseno, who named Gabriel Saez to ride Tizgale. “She’s trained really well since that race. I think she’s really going to run a good race.”
Tizgale is one of four horses Sagamore transferred to Orseno’s stable, with which it has had a limited but successful association.
Maryland-based Sagamore Farms bought 50 percent of the Orseno-trained Happy My Way last year after winning an allowance and the Sir Shackleton Stakes at Gulfstream Park for owner Mel Paikoff.
“Happy My Way went on and had a good year for them and won the Maryland Sprint Handicap (G3) on Preakness Day,” Orseno said. “They’re from Maryland, and that’s their day.”
Maryland-bred Tizgale is rated second at 4-1 in the morning line for the Sunset, which attracted a field of eight, including Catching Fireflies, the 3-1 morning-line favorite. The Ralph Nicks-trained 4-year-old filly notched a decision over Tizgale when she captured the Jan. 25 allowance. The daughter of Value Plus was bumped repeatedly at the start of a sixth-place finish in the Lady’s Turf Sprint on Feb. 21.
The turf sprint field will also include Fascinante (9-2), Aquinnah (5-1), Upbeat Mood (6-1), Double Secret (8-1), Satan’s Mistress (12-1) and It’s Saturday Nite (12-1).
