Thursday works: Off for 2 years, top-level winner is back on tab
Multiple graded-stakes winner Beyond Brilliant continued his preparations for a return to the races with a four-furlong workout in 49.6 seconds at Santa Anita on Thursday.
The move by the 7-year-old son of Twirling Candy, who is trained by John Shirreffs, was the 14th fastest of 29 works at the distance.
His previous work was eight days ago going three furlongs at Santa Anita.
The winner of the 2021 Hollywood Derby (G1) and the City of Hope (G2) and Charles Whittingham (G2) stakes the following year, has not been seen in the afternoon since his runner-up effort in the Seabiscuit Handicap (G2) going 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Del Mar in November 2022.

Shirreffs told Daily Racing Form in early 2023 that Beyond Brilliant had suffered an undisclosed injury and would be sidelined for at least the early part of the year.
"He'll need a little time. ... It's nothing too serious," he said at the time.
Beyond Brilliant was one of 13 graded-stakes winners recording timed workouts on Thursday. The others were:
Trikari (Oscar Performance), a Grade 1 winner (2024 Belmont Derby Invitational), worked five furlongs in 1:01.4 at Fair Hill on Thursday morning. It was the faster of two works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed third in the Maker's Mark Mile (G1) going one mile on the turf at Keeneland on April 11 for trainer Graham Motion.
Federal Judge (Army Mule), a Grade 2 winner (2024 Phoenix), worked four furlongs in 48.8 seconds at Churchill Downs on Thursday morning. It was the 28th fastest of 49 works at the distance. His previous work was 11 days ago going four furlongs at Churchill Downs. In his last start he placed fifth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint going six furlongs on the main track at Del Mar on Nov. 2 for trainer Brad Cox.
Our Shot (Kantharos), a Grade 2 winner (2024 Woodford), worked four furlongs in 49.2 seconds at Belmont Park on Thursday morning. It was the 72nd fastest of 179 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at Belmont Park. In his last start he placed fourth in the Shakertown (G2) going 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf at Keeneland on April 8 for trainer John Terranova.
Prince Abama (Tamayuz), a Grade 2 winner (2022 Hollywood Turf Cup), worked five furlongs in 1:00.8 at Los Alamitos on Thursday morning. It was the second fastest of six works at the distance.
