Thorpedo Anna, a certain division champion who may be named horse of the year next month, underwent a procedure Thursday to repair a jawbone injury, trainer Kenny McPeek revealed in a podcast and on social media.

“At some point she had a sore inside her mouth we watched, and it wouldn’t heal,” McPeek wrote Sunday on X. “(A) scan (and) X-rays found a small splinter of a bone was the problem and needed (to be) removed. It was done standing and expecting it will no longer be an issue. It’s never easy.”

McPeek confirmed the diagnosis in an appearance on the HHH Racing Podcast hosted by Howard Kravets.

“Sequestrum, a piece of dead bone, was discovered recently,” Kravets wrote on X. “The filly ran with it in winning the Cotillion (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Distaff.”

On a break at a Kentucky farm since she made the Nov. 2 Distaff her fifth Grade 1 victory this year, Thorpedo Anna “should be OK to train in two weeks,” McPeek said in a Sunday text to Horse Racing Nation.

The Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) in April at Oaklawn has been mentioned as a possibility for the Fast Anna filly’s 4-year-old debut, but it is too soon to confirm that.

McPeek posted a video showing the equine dentist Tanner King, Rood & Riddle veterinarian Brad Tanner and farm manager Alan Shell working Thursday on Thorpedo Anna, who was walking outside her barn stall shortly after the procedure.

“She’s amazing,” McPeek said.
