This Week in Racing: Jolie Olimpica stars at Santa Anita
Following an action-packed long weekend of racing across the country, the stakes schedule runs light through Sunday -- with a Santa Anita feature marking the return of unbeaten turf runner Jolie Olimpica the exception.
Elsewhere, there are no official stops on the roads to the Kentucky Derby or Kentucky Oaks. However, the Mine that Bird at Sunland Park could feature the second start of well-regarded maiden Exaulted from the Peter Eurton barn.
Below is a closer look at some of this week’s races of note. Click on the race name where applicable to view a list of potential starters.
FEATURE RACE
$200,000 Buena Vista Stakes (G2), Santa Anita, Saturday
Jolie Olimpica made a smashing U.S. debut when drawing off to win the Jan. 11 Las Cienegas (G3) going 5 ½ furlongs at Santa Anita. Owned by Rick Porter’s Fox Hill Farms and trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella, the 4-year-old chestnut filly was perfect in three starts and a Group 1 winner in her native Brazil before arriving stateside.
"She’s been working well and we’re hoping we can do as well going a mile," Mandella said of a try at the Buena Vista.
Also expected in this turf race for older fillies and mares is Carressa, a lightly raced daughter of Uncle Mo who has won three of her last four starts for trainer John Shirreffs. Most recently, she won the Megahertz (G3) when trying stakes company for the first time on Jan. 20 at Santa Anita.
This race could also mark the U.S. debut of Muchly. The 4-year-old Iffraaj filly won two of nine starts in England for John Gosden and is now trained by Simon Callaghan.

Given a brief freshening after that effort, Ice Princess returned on Jan. 20 to win allowance optional claimer at Aqueduct on Jan. 20.
