Thewayiam, owned by Great Point Stables, Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group and Bethlehem Stables, got a ground-saving trip under jockey Jose Ortiz entering the stretch to win the $100,000 Herescomesthebride (G3) by 1 ¾ lengths over Amertume. Brattata was third.
Described earlier in the week as the “Energizer Bunny” by trainer Graham Motion, Thewayiam has now won four of five races since coming to the U.S. from Europe. The 3-year-old daughter of Thewayyouare came into the Herecomesthebride off a victory Feb. 3 at Gulfstream in the Sweetest Chant (G3). She covered the 1 1/16-mile course in 1:41.41.
“I went to the fence and saved all the ground," said winning jockey Jose Ortiz. "I stayed there and when it was time to go, she responded really really well."
My Favorite Gift, fourth in the Sweetest Chant, went to the front in the Herecomesthebride and set fractions of :23.77, :48.33 and 1:12.34 while Ortiz rated Thewayiam toward sixth along the inside. Around the final turn, Ortiz moved Thewayiam along the inside and then drove to the lead in the stretch.
