Should Flightline be the 2021 champion male sprinter?
An informal, 24-hour Twitter poll conducted by Horse Racing Nation indicates that Jackie's Warrior is the leading candidate to win the Eclipse Award as the best male sprinter of 2021.
Four candidates were provided, and 620 people cast votes. Here's the breakdown of the vote:
• Jackie's Warrior: 47 percent
• Flightline: 28 percent
• Golden Pal: 17 percent
• Aloha West: 8 percent
Jackie's Warrior put together a 7: 4-1-1 record for 2021. He won four graded stakes before fading to finish sixth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.
You probably know about Flightline's easy wins while going 3-for-3. If not, Ed DeRosa explains that he is the fastest horse in a generation through three starts.
The case for Golden Pal stems from his 3-for-4 record in 2021, with all three wins in graded stakes capped by a 1 1/4-length win in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.
And Aloha West won the Breeders' Cup Sprint by a nose over Dr. Schivel. It was the second graded stakes attempted by the 4-year-old Hard Spun colt, who was beaten a neck in the Phoenix Stakes (G2).
Not on the list was Dr. Schivel, whose year got off to such a promising start and then ended in disappointment including that "miserable inch" in the Breeders' Cup. (Read more here.)
Multiple commenters believe that was a mistake. YoungboyOFFicial commented: "Dr schivel should be on this list and be the obvious winner. Flightline started too late to even be on the list even though he is obviously the fastest one."
