The tab: National Treasure fires bullet in final work for Whitney

In his final workout before Saturday’s Grade 1 Whitney Stakes, three-time Grade 1 winner National Treasure fired a bullet Sunday morning for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert at Del Mar.

The Met Mile (G1) winner who also scored in last year’s Preakness and this year’s Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) went five furlongs in 59.4 seconds, the fastest of the track’s 52 morning workouts at that distance.

The 4-year-old Quality Road colt owned by the SF Racing partnership has had six consecutive weekly workouts as he gets ready for next weekend’s $1 million race at Saratoga.

Also training at Del Mar for Baffert, 3-year-old colt Muth went a half-mile in 49.8 seconds as he works toward a possible comeback next month in the Travers (G1) at Saratoga. Scratched from the Preakness because of a fever, Muth has not raced since March 30, when he won the Arkansas Derby (G1).

There were no fewer than 27 workouts Sunday by graded-stakes winners across the U.S. and Canada.

National Treasure (Quality Road), a three-time Grade 1 winner (2024 Metropolitan Handicap, 2024 Pegasus World Cup Invitational, 2023 Preakness), worked five furlongs in 59.4 seconds at Del Mar on Sunday morning. It was the fastest of 52 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going seven furlongs at Del Mar. In his last start he won the Metropolitan Handicap (G1) going one mile on the main track at Saratoga on June 8 for trainer Bob Baffert.

Muth (Good Magic), a two-time Grade 1 winner (2024 Arkansas Derby, 2023 American Pharoah), worked four furlongs in 49.8 seconds at Del Mar. It was the 68th fastest of 96 works at the distance. Aspen Grove (Justify), a Grade 1 winner (2023 Belmont Oaks Invitational), worked four furlongs in 54.6 seconds at Saratoga. It was the slowest of 59 works at the distance.
