346 Triple Crown nominations ranked by highest speed figure

Sorting through the 346 Triple Crown nominations, one of the best ways to look at this list seemed to be to rank them by fastest speed figures.  Below, we have that complete list.

But in putting the list together, several interesting items stood out.

First, of the 346 Triple Crown nominations, only 241 have a Horse Racing Nation speed figure. That essentially means that only 241 of them have run yet in North America, so they are either unstarted maidens or international runners.

Secondly, only 164 of the nominations have broken their maiden yet. So from a foal crop estimated at 17,850, only 164 3-year-olds have broken their maiden and are nominated to the Triple Crown.

Finally, what may be most interesting, is that the two highest speed figures on our list both come out of a maiden race. Speak Easy earned a 114 HRN speed figure for his maiden debut win at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 27, and Victory Avenue earned a 111 speed figure for his second-place finish.
