Test fair odds: This horse can beat favorite at right price

A small but talented field awaits the Test Stakes on Saturday, but unlike many top sprint races, there is not a lot of early speed in this Grade 1 seven-furlong contest for 3-year-old fillies.

That adds to the intrigue for sure, as likely favorite Ways And Means cuts back to a true one-turn sprint for the first time since her two-year-old season. She has Brisnet Pace Ratings quick enough to be on the front end, but that has not been her preferred style and certainly was not in play when sprinting last year.

Second choice Emery has been able to sit off relatively soft paces for sprinting types, so a similar trip seems likely here. The rail post position might force jockey Tyler Gaffalione's hands early, but considering the expected complexion of the race, I see that as a positive.

I give the edge to Emery, whose only loss was to eventual champion Just F Y I when going 1 1/16 miles in the Frizette last year. Considering she will be a longer price than Ways And Means, that makes this race an attractive wagering proposition since I don't think the favorite is the most likely winner.

I really do not like any of the other four fillies. Denim and Pearls has one race that's fast enough to contend with our top two picks, but she really reacted to that and is not the right price to gamble that she can get back to it.

I will bet Emery to win and single on all multi-race bets with a "back up" place bet that is a straight Ways And Means-Emery exacta.
