Tend Splashes Home at Churchill Downs

Billy, Donna and Justin HaysTend, a three-time stakes winner, took the lead nearing the three-sixteenths pole and splashed home to a 1 ¼-length victory over Golden Country in the $53,107 Wednesday afternoon feature at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Joe Woodard and ridden by Corey Lanerie, Tend covered the six furlongs on the sloppy main track in 1:11.17.

Tend broke well under Lanerie and then was rated in fourth in the field of five through fractions of :21.80 and :45.79. A 6-year-old gelded son of Dynaformer, Tend moved for the leaders at the three-eighths pole, took the lead in mid-stretch and was kept to task under consistent urging from Lanerie until crossing the wire.

Favored in the field of five at odds of 6-5, Tend returned mutuels of $4.60 and $2.80. Theodore Bates Jr.’s Golden Country finished second and returned $3.80. Show wagering was cancelled following the scratch of Congressional Page.

The victory was worth $33,000 and increased Tend’s bankroll to $455,232 with a record of 10-5-7 from 31 lifetime starts.

Racing continues Thursday with a 10-race program highlighted by a five-day Pick 6 carryover of $17,281 and a Super Hi-5 carryover of $5,103. The Pick 6 will begin with the fifth race at 2:34 p.m. EST and the Super Hi-5 will be contested in the finale at 5:03 p.m. Post time for the first race Thursday is 12:40 p.m.
