Richard Santulli’s Tannery sat just off the slow fractions of Lonesome Town before moving for the lead around the far turn and holding off the late charge of Overheard to capture the $75,000 Miss Liberty Stakes at Monmouth Park on Monday by a head.

Trained by Alan Goldberg, Tannery stepped the mile and a sixteenth over firm turf in 1:43 4/5 and returned $5.60, $2.80 and $2.40 as the favorite in the field of five fillies and mares.  Overheard completed the $12.80 exacta and paid $3 and $2.40. It was another head back to Lonesome Town, who paid $3 to show.

“She was very, very impressive,” said winning jockey Julian Pimentel.  “We were just galloping through the early parts of the race so I just let her go along.  When I asked her she really quickened.  She gave a real nice performance today.”

Winner of the Grade 1 E. P. Taylor at Woodbine last year, Tannery, a 5-year-old by Dylan Thomas from the Sadler’s Wells mare Danse Grecque, was making her first start of 2014 in the Miss Liberty.  The $45,000 winner’s share of the purse boosted her lifetime earnings to $820,334.
