Tango Run took advantage of an open rail to run off with the $75,000 Miss Ohio Stakes at JACK Thistledown Racino Saturday, coasting home to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Count de Loot was up late for second after passing Summit Point, who finished another 1 1/4 lengths back in third.
Trained by Doug Cowans for owner Michael Foster, Tango Run is now undefeated in two starts. The Miss Ohio is her first black type win.
Summit Point set the pace in :22.88 and :47.62 as Tango Run raced in third, a length and a half off the lead after having to steady out of the gate. Jockey Rex Stokes III made the winning move leaving the turn and the winner was home free under a hand ride. Racing on a sealed muddy track, Tango Run finished the 5 1/2 furlongs for 2-year-old Ohio-bred fillies in 1:06.88.
“I’d like to see her break a little better than she has,” said Cowans, “and I’d like to see her get a clean trip. Besides having to steady out of the gate, it looked like she was going to be caught inside on the turn, but it opened up. She was in a position to wait the whole time. She’s overcome some adversity in both starts. A lot of young horses will give up [when they get in trouble] but she hasn’t. Maybe we haven’t seen the best of her yet.”
Best of You completed the Miss Ohio Superfecta, followed by G’s Ship Load and Circus Rings.
Sent off the 4-5 favorite, Tango Run paid $3.60, $2.20 and $2.10.
By Run Away and Hide out of Thedoctorscat, by Tale of the Cat, Tango Run was bred in Ohio by Dr. Harold Fishman. Her two wins in two starts have accounted for $63,000 in purse earnings.
Tango Run will point toward the Tah Dah Stakes August 27 at Belterra Park, Cowans said.
