Having raced previously in the shadow of her undefeated stablemate Lady Eli, Long Lake Stable and Beacon Hill Thoroughbreds’ Tammy the Torpedo got a graded stakes victory of her own with a front-running 1 ½-length triumph in Saturday’s $150,000 Suwannee River (G3) at Gulfstream Park.
The 68th running of the Suwannee River for fillies and mares 4 and up on the grass was the third of six stakes, four of them graded, on a 13-race program that was anchored by the $350,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (G1) and $500,000 Donn Handicap (G1).
It was the second straight stakes victory for Tammy the Torpedo, a 4-year-old daughter of More Than Ready who overcame post 11 to capture the 1 1/16-mile Tropical Park Oaks Dec. 19 at Gulfstream to cap her sophomore season.
“It’s a big deal for this filly. The last couple years she’s been right behind Lady Eli, who has similar ownership,” winning trainer Chad Brown said. “Now she’s got her own graded win this time.”
Making just her sixth career start and fourth off nearly a year layoff due to minor ailments, Tammy the Torpedo broke alertly from her rail post and found herself in front through a quarter-mile in 23.93 seconds, a half in 48.58 and six furlongs in 1:12.50, chased by Uchenna and Argentinean Group 1 winner Sweetie Girl.
Jockey Joel Rosario, aboard for three of Tammy the Torpedo’s four career wins, approached the stretch with a one-length advantage and had plenty left to sprint clear from late-running Rainha Da Bateria and Habibi, who were separated by a head at the wire.
“There wasn’t a lot of speed in the race and Chad was telling me that we might find ourselves on the lead, or if somebody goes, to follow,” Rosario said. “It worked out good. It took a little time to get out of the gate, but she responded after that and took me all the way to the lead. After that she just kept on going.”
Favored at 9-5 in the field of eight, Tammy the Torpedo ($5.80) ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.28 over a firm turf course. Her stablemate Light in Paris dead-heated for fourth with Sweetie Girl, followed by E B Ryder, Uchenna and A Little Bit Sassy.

“[Joel] used his judgment on the first turn and rolled out decent fractions and the filly showed a lot of heart to kick on and run home,” Brown said. “They were honest enough fractions. It’s listed as firm but we did get a little rain earlier. When you’re going 12 and change going three-quarters, she’s going honest fractions, and she still kicked home. She ran terrific.”
