Talamo Wins Another BHP Stakes Aboard Schiaparelli

The stakes wins keep coming for jockey Joe Talamo at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Schiaparelli, the 3-5 favorite, gave Talamo his fifth consecutive stakes success Sunday when she easily dispatched of five opponents in the $73,710 Great Lady M.

Talamo’s streak began May 18 when he won the Fran’s Valentine with Unusual Hottie and the Grade II Marjorie L. Everett Handicap with Open Water, continued May 19 when Iotapa took the Railbird and May 25 with Obviously’s victory in the Grade II American Handicap.

Second behind stablemate – and 2012 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint heroine – Mizdirection in the Grade III Las Cienegas April 13 at Santa Anita, Schiaparelli made the lead shortly after the start Sunday and wasn’t seriously menaced the remainder of the six furlongs.

Owned by breeder Ran Jan Racing, Inc. and trained by Mike Puype, Schiaparelli, a 5-year-old gray daughter of Ghostzapper and the Avenue of Flags mare Cambiocorsa, covered the distance in 1:08.66. The 2 ½ length victory was her fourth in eight starts and pushed her earnings to $184,184. She paid $3.20, $2.20 and $2.10.

“She ran real well today,’’ said Puype. “I imagine the (Grade II, $150,000) Royal Heroine (Mile July 6) will be next for her. The race was just what we wanted, hopefully not have her be asked too hard. She still has some habits she has to shake to be a distance horse, but if she can settle down a little more there’s no reason she won’t run a flat mile.’’

Purim’s Dancer, who broke quickly from her inside post, was able to hold second by a nose over stablemate Customer Base, who was making her first start in seven months for trainer Tom Proctor.

Ridden by Hall of Famer Gary Stevens, who was seeking his first stakes victory at Hollywood Park since he won the 2005 A Gleam Invitational Handicap with Alphabet Kisses, Purim’s Dancer, the 5-2 second choice, returned $3 and $2.20. The show price on Customer Base was $3.20.

Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith replaced Garrett Gomez aboard Customer Base. Bothered by lingering body soreness after being involved in a first race spill May 24, Gomez took off his two scheduled mounts Sunday, but is expected back Monday, according to agent Tony Matos.
