In her third stateside start, English-bred Symposium showed a good deal more early speed as she went to the front and registered an impressive 2 ¼ length win under Tyler Baze in Santa Anita’s $58,000 allowance feature. Trained by Jeff Mullins, she got 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course in 1:13.12.
“I thought she’d win easy last time (a ninth-place finish down the hill on March 19)” said Baze. “She just stopped when we hit the dirt crossing that day. Jeff took his time with her and got her straightened out…She’s a really nice filly, I think she’ll stretch out to a mile.”
Off at 3-1 in a second condition allowance that attracted five fillies and mares three and up, Symposium paid $8.40, $4.80 and $4.40.
Owned by Red Baron’s Barn, LLC and Rancho Temescal, LLC, Symposium improved her overall mark to 14-5-0-2. With the winner’s share of $34,800, she increased her earnings to $83,086.
Head and head with Cuyathy until the furlong pole, Symposium was never threatened by the runner-up Indriya, who finished 3 ½ lengths in front of longshot Demigoddess.
Ridden by Tiago Pereira, Indriya was off at 8-5 and paid $3.20 and $2.80.
The biggest price in the field at 37-1 with Modesto Linares, Demigoddess paid $5.80 to show.
The 6-5 favorite with Kent Desormeaux, Scattagirl never got untracked and ran a distant last.
Fractions on the race were 21.26, 43.31 and 1:06.86.
