Super Screener: Playable long shots abound in Del Mar Mile

Sure, the Pacific Classic is the feature Saturday at Del Mar, but from a wagering standpoint, the place where the turf meets the surf might have saved the best for last. The Grade 2 Del Mar Mile caps the 11-race card, with high-priced morning-line entrants figuring prominently in Super Screener's analysis.

This week's Super Screener includes picks, analysis and wagering strategy across 10 graded stakes at three racetracks. There is also a special section for the late Pick 4 on Saturday at Del Mar that includes the Green Flash, Pacific Classic and Del Mar Mile.

And if Mike Shutty is correct, then there will be big will-pays on the board for the Del Mar Mile.

"We conclude the action-packed Saturday racing with another great wagering opportunity: The Del Mar Mile won by #3 Du Jour last year, but you can make a case this year for more than half the field," Shutty wrote.

Du Jour, the 8-5 morning-line favorite, is one of three top win contenders identified by Super Screener. But the others promise to offer bigger prices, with Almedares at 10-1 morning line getting the top value designation.

"Trainer Phil D'Amato sends three horses in here, and (Almedares) emerges on top with the top value edge," Shutty wrote. "He is primed for for a peak effort, and form-cycle analysis concur that he is sitting on a new lifetime best performance here given all the upside in just his third start since December."
