Super Screener preview: It’s Hoosier Philly’s time

It is difficult to call a filly who has won 5 of 12 starts and has earned $845,660 a disappointment. When you lose your 3-year-old debut at 2-5 as the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby, that is a natural word to consider.

Hoosier Philly’s early 3-year-old season did not go according to plan, but trainer Tom Amoss potentially has righted the ship with a win in the $200,000 Dig a Diamond Stakes on April 27 at Oaklawn to snap a four-race losing streak. Saturday she goes in the Grade 3 Shawnee Stakes at Churchill Downs.

“Hoosier Philly may get overlooked some in the wagers, but form-cycle analysis is flashing a bullish signal for her return to her previous top-established form,” Mike Shutty said in this week’s Super Screener. "She really did appear to go off form last year but appears to be rounding back into top form while returning to Churchill, where she is undefeated in three starts. She is sitting on a big performance and is a viable win contender offering value."

The top three contenders by morning line odds Wet Paint, Xigera and Scyla. Shutty sees Xigera as the most likely winner but is dubious on her value. Complicating the wagering matrix is that Xigera has the look of an all-or-nothing type, which is why Wet Paint received Super Screener’s “most reliable board-hitter” designation. Scyla is a definite toss as first or second choice.
