Super Screener preview: 20-1 shot caps Santa Anita Saturday

The stakes slate is pretty light this weekend, but that does not mean there is a lack of opportunity.

This weeks Super Screener took a look at both graded stakes while mixing in allowance races on both of those undercards as well as the lone added-money event at Gulfstream Park.

It is one of those allowance races at Santa Anita that most catches the value-seeker’s eye, as Gold Council is 20-1 on the morning line and one of two top win contenders in the one-mile turf race that is the finale Saturday.

“The pace will be swift and led by a long shot in recent maiden-claiming winner Arrogates Spirit,” Super Screener creator Mike Shutty said. “He’ll be hounded throughout, however, which should allow Gold Council to work out a perfect trip.

“He won his debut over this turf course way back in November 2022. That’s a good sign, but then something went wrong, and he was put away for a year. After the layoff, he finished up the track in a five-furlong affair over the Del Mar turf but then showed big improvement next out at Santa Anita. He is lightly raced and building foundation, so there is a lot of upside at a nice price.”
