Super Screener: San Clemente offers high payoff potential

Full fields and competitive racing is the norm throughout the opening weekend card at Del Mar, and the featured Grade 2, San Clemente Stakes on Saturday where the turf meets the surf is certainly emblematic of that.

The race for 3-year-old fillies going a mile on the grass drew an overflow field of 16. No. 7 Infinite Diamond was an early scratch so No. 16 Justique is the only remaining also-eligible with No. 15 Broadway Girls drawing in.

Super Screener author Mike Shutty is looking to the outside with No. 14 The Wild Grazer at 15-1 morning line as a top win contender while also giving a shot to No. 10 Olivia Twist, 50-1 on the morning line, as a top long shot. It's no wonder Super Screener rates this race as having "high payoff potential."

"Toss that race two back as she was fit to be tied, and with that race removed she is on that excellent form-cycle ascent featuring gradual, incremental moves forward in each start," Shutty says of the Jeff Mullins-trained The Wild Grazer. "Her last performance was her best, and it showed the same kind of ideal balanced Energy Distribution Profile she revealed in her second-best start three races back. She is sitting on a bit race here and will not disappoint at huge odds.

"Use liberally in wagers."

As for Olivia Twist, "She fits here based on her last two races," Shutty said. "Certainly turf is a question, but if she were to take to it, you don't want to be holding dead tickets because you didn't include her."
