Super Screener preview: There is 1 horse to avoid in King’s Plate

With all three Triple Crown race winners expected for the Grade 1 Travers Stakes next week at Saratoga, there is rightfully a lot of looking ahead to that 1 1/4-mile race. But there is another 10-furlong race for 3-year-olds this weekend that Mike Shutty’s Super Screener identified as “high payoff potential.”

The Kings Plate attracted 19 entrants to Woodbine with 17 expected to start in race 10 on Sunday’s 13-race card. It is the last leg of an all-stakes Pick 5 and the payoff sequence of a mandatory Super High 5 payout. The filly no. 2 Elysian Field at 8-1 on the morning line could be a key to a big score.

“Fillies frequently win this race, so no issues with her running against males here. She is bred to go long, and her rousing victory in the Woodbine Oaks gave us a glimpse into her brilliance,” Shutty said. “She’ll sit a perfect, ground-saving trip two lengths behind her pace-leading stablemate no. 13 Paramount Prince, reserving energy throughout before unleashing the final quarter-mile of the race.

“This is a clear Super Screener top win, top board hitter and top value pick in the race.”

The King’s Plate Super High 5 could have as many as 742,560 combinations, more than the 117,280 combos in a 20-horse Kentucky Derby superfecta.
