Super Screener preview: Opportunity Saturday at Del Mar

Last weekend was huge not only from a stakes standpoint, what with the Breeders' Cup and everything, but also for Super Screener, which identified several key long shots during the weekend at Del Mar, including top pick Citizen Bull in the Juvenile.

Of course, Mike Shutty never has been one to rest on his laurels. And although this weekend's slate lacks the volume of action we saw last week, there is still plenty of value to be found – and it's not always in stakes company).

For example, race 5 on Saturday at Del Mar is an optional claiming event with a clear favorite in no. 10 Steak Fries, but the other main threat, no. 3 Timty, offers a much more generous price.

"After the Breeders' Cup, the pickings are slim for stakes races, and this race offers better wagering opportunity than the short-field stakes on the card," Shutty said. "We get back to the Breeders' Cup host track for this turf affair with 10 2-year-olds entered to sprint five furlongs.

"The pace will result in something close to par but with several runners forwardly placed. Leading the way will be no. 9 Just Trust Me if he takes to the turf. Otherwise no. 2 The Shillelagh should be the pace.

"The Super Screener top win pick will be Timty for trainer Doug O'Neill," Shutty continued. "This gelding is bred to excel on turf, and his four starts on dirt have come against much tougher competition. The blinkers go back on to help focus, and his work two back was quite handy and signals readiness here."
