Super Screener preview: Ky. Oaks winner is vulnerable in Test
The Super Screener got Whitney week off to a good start with winning win and exacta bets on the Grade 2 Glens Falls Stakes on Thursday at Saratoga, and Horse Racing Nation's flagship analysis product looks to keep the good times rolling on a loaded Saturday of racing.
There are seven stakes at Saratoga and Del Mar, and the primary play on Saturday is in the Test Stakes, which is the second leg of a cross-country Pick 5 that includes the trio of Grade 1 races at Saratoga and the pair of Hambletonian races at the Meadowlands.
The Test is the opening leg of the all-Grade 1 Pick 3 with the Saratoga Derby next and the Whitney featuring Cody's Wish concluding both the Pick 5 and Pick 3.
Free PPs for cross-country Pick 5 including both Hambo races.
The Test is a test, indeed, as Pretty Mischievous, a Grade 1 winner at both 1 1/8 miles in the Kentucky Oaks and 1 1/16 in the Acorn, drew the rail for her cut back to seven furlongs. She is the morning-line favorite and will vie for that rol with undefeated Maple Leaf Mel, who Super Screener prefers with her outside speed.
"She will try to carry that abundant speed in her second race off the layoff," Mike Shutty said. "She may be a needs-the-lead-alone type, but she should be able to clear all rivals shortly after the start. The most likely winner, but value is a question."
If bettors go heavy on Maple Leaf Mel, then Jersey Pearl could be a long-shot alternative.
"This filly is on a rapid rise and has shown a balance in the way she carries her energy," Shutty said. "With plenty of speed in front her, she will secure the right trip."
