The weekend slate features the last graded stakes of 2023 in New York as well as one of the last Grade 1 races of the year. But a pair of races run under starter conditions as part of the Claiming Crown series at Fair Grounds have big payout potential, according to Mike Shutty's Super Screener.

The Claiming Crown series of added-money events for horses who have started for various tags during the past year always features competitive fields with runners converging from myriad circuits.

The Canterbury Tom Metzen Memorial, which is race 7, and Claiming Crown Jewel, race 10, caught Shutty's eye.

In the first of the pair, Counterstrike is 10-1 on the morning line and factors among more logical selections with "most reliable board hitting" chances, Mischievous Rogue and top value Atta Party at 8-1 morning line.

"With the anticipated demanding pace set up, this race sets up really well for the Super Screener top win and top long-shot pick in the race, Counterstrike," Shutty said. "Put a line through that last race, as that was way, way over his head with no chance."

In the Jewel, Luigi's Spirit not only catches the eye as a 15-1 morning-line "top win contender" but also has "most reliable board hitter" and "top long shot" designations.

"This lightly raced 4-year-old is making just his third start since June and has moved forward in each of his previous two races," Shutty said. "Form-cycle analysis projects a move forward while other lower-priced horses in this race are tailing off. His balance and tactical nature have contributed to his remarkable consistency. Offers value."

In addition to covering each of the graded stakes Saturday at Aqueduct, Super Screener offers ideas on playing the all-graded stakes Pick 4 there. Each previewed race includes wagering strategy as well.
