Super Screener: Who to use in Preakness 2018 exotic bets

Mike Shutty, author of Horse Racing Nation’s Super Screener handicapping system, envisions a stiffer test for Justify in the 2018 Preakness Stakes than he faced two weeks ago in winning the Kentucky Derby.

And it all has to do with a rematch against the Derby runner-up.

“Connections of Good Magic will deploy the same tactics that they did in the Derby by pressing Justify in close attendance,” Shutty said. “This time, since the pace will be more modest, Good Magic should have more in the tank during the stretch drive and make Justify work harder for the victory.

“If anyone is going to upset Justify for the win, it is this colt who has had a light 2018 campaign and is improving with every race.”

And no matter which of the two gets your win pick, both are must-use horses in the exotics Saturday at Pimlico. But who of their six rivals do you need to also include in those Trifecta and Superfecta tickets? That’s the Super Screener’s speciality, as Shutty derives his handicapping on the race based on 20 years worth of Preakness trends delved down to 15 criteria.

Here are two longshots Shutty’s counting on to be in the hunt in the Triple Crown series’ second leg…

#4 Diamond King (30-1) “offers exceptional value in this race as the horse most likely to finish third in the race, according to the Super Screener, especially if connections take this one back about four lengths off the early leaders. He distributes energy in a superb, balanced way as indicated by the 90 Brisnet ratings across the board in this running line coming out of the Federico Tesio. In addition, he earned those numbers coming off a layoff and projects to move forward off that start in a big way to earn a new lifetime top for a horse that will have no challenge with this distance.”

#8 Bravazo (20-1) “surprised when sixth in the Derby, getting a clean trip, and clearly relished the sloppy going. Hofburg was the better horse and Lone Sailor would have passed him with a cleaner trip, but no taking away his good finish and he did so going wide throughout covering more ground than the aforementioned pair. With Lone Sailor’s Morning Line odds coming in lower than 20-1, Bravazo now becomes the 2nd long shot pick behind Diamand King.”
