Super Screener: Who to toss in your Louisiana Derby bets

Looking for a longshot in Saturday’s Grade 2, $1 million Louisiana Derby? Trainer Dallas Stewart has accounted for nearly all of the big bomber prices that have hit the superfecta the last five years. But Horse Racing Nation’s Super Screener handicapping system doesn’t see it happening again this weekend.

One of the Super Screener’s strengths is in determining which contenders to toss, especially in the multi-race wagers, then creating wagering bundles that will cash big. We’ll look to do just that with the Louisiana Derby after author Mike Shutty’s suggested Rebel Stakes bets returned nearly $400.

The inspiration for the Super Screener Stakes Weekly analysis came from our loyal Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup Super customers. They have often asked us for a product focused on analyzing the key graded stakes that run each weekend throughout the year.

What's offered here -- for free -- is only a small sample of the full Super Screener now available. This weekend's Screener will also cover the Fair Grounds Oaks, Muniz Memorial and Sunland Derby.

So, here’s who to toss in the Louisiana Derby:

#3 Marmello is your likely pace leader that is in way over this head facing so much tougher plus the added ground. No chance.

#4 Givemeaminit is bred to sprint and has shown when he sprints he hits the board. But when he went a two-turn route against this caliber of horses, he finished up the track. Was no where to be found in the Risen Star. Still, alert: This is the Stewart long shot.

#5 Retirement Fund is going the wrong way for the Asmussen barn. Apparently, he was not fond of the muddy track last out and returns to Fair Grounds, where he is 2-for-2 while leading wire to wire against easier. Is a definite pace factor here but fades after a mile.

#10 Dark Templar couldn’t have enjoyed a more perfect trip in a weak Optional Claimer. He commanded a lone lead cutting abysmally slow fractions and then turned the race into a two-furlong sprint to the wire. Will sit a couple lengths back here. Pass.
