Super Screener: Weekend long shot is in Daytona at Santa Anita

On a day where most of the action is in the Mid-Atlantic region, the best opportunity might still lie out West where the Grade 3 Daytona Stakes at Santa Anita Park concludes the graded action on Saturday.

With both Delaware and Monmouth playing host to multiple stakes anchored by prep races for the Haskell – the Delaware Derby and Pegasus Stakes, respectively – many eyes will be on Delaware and New Jersey racing but do not ignore one of the closing day features at the Great Race Place.

"I can't recall the last time the Super Screener landed on a 30-1 (morning line) shot as the top scoring horse, but that's exactly what we have to work with in this turf sprint affair featuring that right turn, left turn and dirt track cross-over journey," writes Super Screener handicapper Mike Shutty.

The Daytona is race 10 on the Saturday program and features heavily favored 6-5 morning-line choice Motorious. Super Screener is not against the favorite here, per se, but cannot ignore the value posed by its top selection Watsonville.

"Motorious is the obvious choice on paper (but) offers no value," Shutty says. "Watsonville offers more upside potential than do the group of much older horses in this field. He was gelded prior to this race and comes in with a bullet workout."

Each race in Super Screener includes selections, analysis and wagering strategy. For the Daytona, with a big shot in the mix with a logical favorite, Super Screener advises the classic win bet on the price while keying with the favorite in exotics.
