Super Screener: This long shot can spice up Pa. Derby exotics
Super Screener does not shy away recognizing that no. 6 Goal Oriented and no. 8 Baeza are formidable foes in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby on Saturday at Parx, albeit at short prices.
Thankfully, each race in Super Screener includes among its analysis not only top win contenders but also top long shots, and no. 1 So Sandy at 15-1 on the morning line is the horse that caught Michael Shutty's eye.
"He has moved forward in each of his last three starts, and that progression is slated to continue here," Shutty wrote. "He'll be far back coming out of the final turn, so a shot at the win is unlikely, but he is a must use 'underneath' horse at a big price."
Shutty had a hard time separating Goal Oriented and Baeza, but the good thing about liking a 15-1 shot, even underneath, is that you can use both of those short price horses with a long-shot key.
That said, if pressed, Shutty does give a slight lean toward Goal Oriented as the "on top" selection over Baeza.
"Goal Oriented earned the highest Super Screener score in the field, albeit by the narrowest of margins over Baeza," Shutty wrote. "The Bob Baffert-trained colt is coming into this race off a series of long and strong works after receiving a two-month break. This colt possesses a deep energy reserve, and he distributes it in that ideal balanced way which explains his excellent record of consistency."
