Super Screener Santa Anita opening-day preview
Live racing returns to the Great Race Place with an 11-race card Tuesday at Santa Anita, and more than half the races are graded stakes.
Post time for the first of 11 races is 2 p.m. EST with the added-money events beginning at 3 p.m. EST with race 3, the Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes. Mike Shutty's Super Screener dives in to all six stakes races and generally favors logical runners, but some likely prices did find their way on to the La Brea Stakes grid.
The Las Brea (G1) for 3-year-old fillies going seven furlongs attracted a field of 10 with six of the entrants between 3-1 and 6-1 on the morning line. Shutty gives a nod to 3-1 morning-line favorite no. 9 Clearly Unhinged, but no. 4 Big Pond, the fourth choice on the morning line at 5-1, garnered most of his interest.
"She is making just her second start in almost a year, but her last race-, 60 days ago, was a sharp prep for this affair," Shutty said of Big Pond. "One of her best accomplishments last year came in the Santa Ynez earlier this year, sitting off a slow pace but showing some late foot to easily get past others that are entered in this race. She benefits from an even more ideal set up here and form-cycle analysis results reveal the potential for a 4- to 6-point move forward against these."
Each stakes write-up includes top win contenders, most reliable board hitter, top value and top long-shot designations along with written analysis and wagering strategy, not only for each race but also the late Pick 4 as a sequence.
