Super Screener: Oppose chalk in this Kentucky Derby prep
Mike Shutty and I agree: horses exiting the Gun Runner Stakes are a fade in the Lecomte Stakes on Saturday at Fair Grounds.
The Lecomte is a Kentucky Derby points race and starts a string of 13 consecutive weekends with at least one Derby prep race. It is also one of eight stakes covered in this week's Super Screener. Subscribe now and get all 13 weeks of preps plus an extra three weeks including the Kentucky Derby. That is 16 editions of Super Screener with daily Power Picks and Horses to Single Reports all for just $97.
The Lecomte is the first of those preps, and Crown the Buckeye and Chip Honcho are the top two choices on the morning line after finishing third and first, respectively, in the Gun Runner. Super Screener is against both of those preferring instead a pair of 8-1 morning line colts.
Stop the Car is the top tab factoring as a Top Win Contender, Most Reliable Board Hitter and Top Value. White Tiger is also a Top Win Contender and Top Value, but Stop the Car's spot as Most Reliable Board Hitter makes him the most interesting.
"The pace will land right around par with not too much pressure so those horses with two-turn
experience that will be forwardly placed will clearly be advantaged here," Shutty says. "That will certainly be the case for Stop the Car for trainer Brendan Walsh. This Maximum Security colt has achieved something no other horse has in this race, which is doling out 90+ BRIS pace and speed ratings in a gate-to-wire route race, albeit around one turn mile at Churchill Downs. This is exactly what you want to see from a colt that will be making just his third career start. What was very impressive about that victory was the fact that after he pressed fast fractions and pulled away with ease.
"Anything close to the morning line odds of 8-1 represents terrific value."
White Tiger is similarly intriguing as one who projects to sit a trip just off Stop the Car. White Tiger regressed ratings wise last out, but Super Screener Form-Cycle Analysis project a move forward in this spot.
Each Super Screener race includes selections, analysis and wagering strategy. This week's edition also includes a matrix for playing the all-stakes Pick 4 at Fair Grounds that concludes with the Lecomte.
