Super Screener: Looking past the favorites in the San Diego

There is plenty of high-class stakes action across the country this weekend and Super Screener has you covered.

The time-tested, data-driven handicapping product developed by author Mike Shutty this week offers in-depth analysis and wagering strategies for the Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1), Jim Dandy (G2) and Bowling Green (G2) from Saratoga, plus the Bing Crosby (G1), San Diego Handicap (G2) and Eddie Read (G2) from Del Mar.

Saturday's San Diego going 1 1/16 miles features a matchup between Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Country Grammer (5-2) for trainer Bob Baffert and eastern invader Mandaloun (4-1), official winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby, for trainer Brad Cox. Super Screener is looking past both favorites for its top win contender.

A second Baffert runner, Defunded, is rated the top win contender at 5-1 on the morning line. Defunded is exiting a second in the May 30 Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) while with trainer Sean McCarthy. In the Gold Cup, Defunded showed the way throughout before getting rundown by There Goes Harvard to lose by a length.

From Super Screener: "(Defunded) was last seen doing all the hard work in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita carving out strong fractions before reluctantly yielding...He really needed that race as it was just his second race in 9 months. He'll relish the cutback to his wheelhouse distance and on the surface that featured his lifetime top (speed figure)...He has now had the benefit of an 8-week break coupled with long and strong works. He appears to be loaded and sitting on a new lifetime top."

Super Screener also rates Tripoli, last year's Pacific Classic (G1) winner, as offering value at 6-1 on the morning line.
