Super Screener: Looking past the favorites in the Mother Goose

It's a light weekend on the stakes front, but that doesn't mean Super Screener isn't still mining for value.

This week's edition of the time-tested and data-driven handicapping product created by author Mike Shutty offers analysis and wagering strategies for races from Belmont Park, Churchill Downs and Thistledown, which hosts its Ohio Derby (G3) program on Saturday.

At Belmont Park, the $250,000 Mother Goose (G2) is the feature and Super Screener has tabbed a 5-1 shot on the morning line as its top choice.

A compact field of five 3-year-old fillies are set to go 1 1/16-miles in the Mother Goose. Juju's Map for trainer Brad Cox is the even-money favorite. Shahama, who exits a sixth in the Kentucky Oaks for trainer Todd Pletcher, is tabbed as the 9-5 second choice.

Super Screener is looking past both those fillies. Instead, it rates Venti Valentine (5-1) for trainer Jorge Abreu as the "top win contender," "most reliable board hitter," and "top value."

Venti Valentine tracked an "ultra fast" pace in the Kentucky Oaks and then had to check hard on the second turn, as the chart notes. She wound up finishing last of 14.

Super Screener contends Venti Valentine will "sit a great trip" just off the pace set by Juju's Map and the slight cutback in distance should be to her benefit.

"She'll be loaded here as she returns to one turn and the surface on which she is 2-for-2," Super Screener said. "She'll sit a great trip just two lengths off the pace set by Juju's Map, reserving all kinds of energy for a really sharp stretch run to take down the top prize."
