Super Screener: Long-shot opportunity awaits in Kilroe Mile

Two of the biggest days of the Santa Anita and Tampa Bay Downs calendars are both Saturday thanks to a Kentucky Derby prep race at each venue.

Short prices look likely in both the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes and Tampa Bay Derby (G3), respectively, but a long shot caught Mike Shutty's eye in the Kilroe Mile (G2), which is the race between the San Felipe and Santa Anita Handicap. All four of those races plus four others make up this week's Super Screener.

"The pace here will be quite demanding as four very early energy-distribution types duke it out on the front end for at least six furlongs," Shutty says of the Kilroe Mile. "Among them is the Super Screener top win pick Mi Bago, a highly productive 4-year-old from the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse."

Each race in Super Screener includes selections such as top win, top value and top long shots plus analysis and wagering strategy. Subscribe to Super Screener and get all nine editions, up to and including the Kentucky Derby, plus daily Power Picks and Horses to Single reports – all for just $77.

As for that Kilroe, not only is Mi Bago rated favorably at 10-1 morning line but also no. 8 Astronomer is among the top win contenders and top value with an 8-1 morning line.

"Astronomer hasn't won a race since 2024, but this race sets up perfectly for him as he sits a mid-pack trip with all the speed in front of him that will be coming back in a hurry in the late going. He'll benefit from a cutback in distance and is a very solid 'under' play while still being touched in the win spot. It couldn't set up any better for him."
