Super Screener: Local favorite can top Elate in Delaware Handicap
Saturday's renewal of the Delaware Handicap, now a Grade 2 event, features the long awaited return of Bill Mott barn star Elate, who has been away since finishing fourth in the Breeders' Cup Distaff.
In addition to multiple Grade 1 victories, Elate also features a win over the Delaware Park track. But off the layoff, she isn't the top win pick by Horse Racing Nation's Super Screener handicapping system.
What's offered here is a small sample of the full product, in which author Mike Shutty will also handicap other stakes around the country.
As for that Delaware Handicap upset pick...
"It is difficult to see Elate out of the Exacta, but the barn has to just be looking for a solid effort to work in some race conditioning," Shutty said. "A win is not imperative.
"If anyone in this field could take advantage of both the projected pressured pace and Elate ending a layoff, it will be Teresa Z. She sat off the hot pace last out on this track and then proceeded to cruise by a modest field of rivals, but did so in good time and submitted a lifetime top in the process.
"This was another move forward in a progression of form cycle advancements which will continue here. No question about her fitness and ability to get the extra ground and she looms as the best threat to upset Elate and at a square price, sitting 12-1 on the morning line."
Elate and Teresa Z both receive "A" rankings from the Super Screener, but the edge goes to the latter, who excels at Mid-Atlantic tracks and should get a similar setup as in her last out victory in the June 16 Obeah Stakes.
