Super Screener Friday free play: Taking Candy sweet in Saranac
If the Grade 1 Pacific Classic on Saturday at Del Mar is the main course on a holiday menu of races that includes graded stakes coast to coast, then consider the With Anticipation (G3) and Saranac (G3) on Thursday and Friday, respectively, both at Saratoga, an amuse bouche with Super Screener ready to serve you.
The graded-stakes slate also includes the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) and Grade 1 races for 2-year-olds on the dirt to close the premiere summer meetings.
Both the With Anticipation and Saranac are turf contests, with the With Anticipation for 2-year-olds and the Saranac for 3-year-olds.
Mike Shutty's Super Screener has incredible insight into both of these turf tilts, but it is the sophomores who have drawn our focus, as No. 2 Carl Spackler is likely a big favorite here but also an underlay.
Taking Candy is the Super Screener top win pick, Shutty writes. "This Cherie DeVaux-trained colt is coming off a sharp-looking victory over this same inner turf course, earning a lofty Brisnet Speed Rating of 94. He'll press here through a bit easier fractions, leaving plenty in the tank for a sharper late kick.
"Presses and pounces for the win while offering great value," Shutty concludes.
This week's Super Screener already includes the two aforementioned stakes and will offer much more as the curtains drop on both Del Mar and Saratoga here.
