Super Screener: Forego is long-shot opportunity on Travers day
A pair of 20-1 morning line horses in the Grade 1 Forego Stakes on Saturday at Saratoga attracted Mike Shutty's attention for this week's edition of Super Screener, which also includes the Travers Stakes (G1) among eight stakes from Charles Town, Saratoga and Del Mar.
Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Sovereignty is certainly a headline talent as the 2-5 morning line favorite in the featured Travers, but the Book'em Danno-Mullikin rematch in the Forego as the preceding race is nice appetizer. Even better for bettors, according to Shutty, is that both those big names figure to be overbet.
"The time to have no. 4 Book'em Danno was in his last race, when he exploded for a massive lifetime top," Shutty said. "This 4-year-old gelding is an incredibly reliable sort and arguably the leading dirt sprinter, but he will offer no value here as the favorite, especially after such a grueling effort in the A.G. Vanderbilt (G2). Regression is likely."
So if not him, then who? Both no. 5 Extra Anejo and no. 11 Doc Sullivan are 20-1 on the morning line. Shutty prefers the former.
"Extra Anejo is a lightly raced colt but highly productive, especially given he is somewhat of a seven-furlong specialist being 3-for-4 at the distance," Shutty says. "He projects to take up a great position in this field, sitting about three lengths off the pace in the two path avoiding all that heavy pace pressure. With his balance and strong late foot, he's going to get the jump on the deep closers.
"This will be just his second race since early May, so another peak effort to match previous tops is expected. The very impressive penultimate work only adds more conviction to the pick. A top win and the top long-shot pick."
Each race in Super Screener includes top win contenders, most reliable board hitter, top value and top long shots along with wagering strategy and analysis.
