Super Screener: Does Faversham fit in Oceanside Stakes?
Faversham, the full brother of Horse of the Year California Chrome, will go from topping state-bred competition at Santa Anita to facing a full field on Del Mar's first card of the year when he runs in Wednesday's $100,000 Oceanside Stakes.
How does the son of Lucky Pulpit, out of the mare Love the Chase, fit in the one-mile turf test? Pretty well, says Mike Shutty, author of Horse Racing Nation's Super Screener handicapping system.
Shutty has compiled a special edition of the Super Screener -- which uses his time-tested methods to separate contenders from pretenders -- for Del Mar's opening day. Order it, and you'll receive his keys to handicapping a Pick 4 sequence that runs from Race 7 through Race 10.
It's the Oceanside, Race 8, that Shutty's particularly excited about.
"It has been awhile since the Super Screener has spotted a race with a playability score of '9' (out of 10), but this is going to occur more often during the Saratoga and Del Mar meets," he said.
The Art Sherman-trained Faversham sits at 15-1 on the morning line.
"He takes a big step up here, but losing the blinkers and switching to the underrated jockey, Tiago Pereira, provided a bit of a wake up," Shutty said. "Given his ideal balanced energy distribution profile and expected hot and pressured pace, he has a big shot to hit the board at a juicy price. Definitely use him 'under' in your Trifecta but even more so at the bottom of the Superfecta wagers."
Shutty lists Faversham as a "B" horse in the field of 14. Three "A" horses are ahead of him, including a 20-1 morning line shot the Super Screener tabs to win the Oceanside.
