Super Screener: Cold exacta is the play in the Apple Blossom

One could be forgiven for writing off the Grade 1 Apple Blossom on Saturday at Oaklawn to horse of the year Thorpedo Anna.

The reigning champion 3-year-old filly and Breeders' Cup Distaff winner is a four-time Grade 1 winner. No one else in this field of seven has even won a single Grade 1 race.

But just because no. 6 Thorpedo Anna will be 1-5 in the win pool does not mean there is no wagering opportunity even with her winning. No. 5 Where's my Ring looks to be the second choice here, which means she will be the favorite underneath Thorpedo Anna in the exacta. But No. 3 Free Like a Girl is the better play, according to Mike Shutty's Super Screener.

"Thorpedo Anna offers absolutely no value at all, so let's take a look at no. 3 Free Like a Girl to be used underneath Thorpedo Anna in a heavy exacta wager," Shutty wrote. "Free Like a Girl is an often-raced but highly productive 6-year-old mare who finished second behind Thorpedo Anna in their last starts (the Azeri Stakes, G2).

"Her last two races were some of her recent best outings, and she just fired two bullet works following those races. She will very well be a big price again and is the only filly in here that has been this close to Thorpedo Anna."

Each race in Super Screener includes top win contender, most reliable board hitter, top value and top long shot designations along with wagering strategy of how to use the horses from each column. Most races include win and exotic wager components, but because of the complexion of this race, Shutty advocates for a straight 6-5 exacta.

Super Screener is available each weekend with stakes previews, analysis and wagering strategy for each race. Order now and get the next three weekends of Screener plus Kentucky Derby week all for $57, a price that also includes daily power picks and horses to single reports.
