Super Screener: Closers often hit Kentucky Derby superfecta
With a fast pace expected in the Kentucky Derby, even following the scratch of Rodríguez, that is good news for closers, if not for the win position, then certainly in multiple spots of the superfecta.
An interesting thing about front-runners in races with spirited paces: they can win, but they rarely stay on to complete the underneath positions. In the last nine Derbys, no "pace" horse was second, third or fourth, though there were six of nine winners.
This is invaluable information when structuring superfecta tickets because the all-or-nothing approach can save a lot of combos at the one-dollar minimum. This particularly applies this year to horses such as No. 1 Citizen Bull, No. 5 American Promise and No. 12 East Avenue.
"This year the pace projects to be quite hot and pressured," Super Screener author Michael Shutty says. "The Super Screener estimates very fast fractions and an advantageous situation for horses coming from off the pace."
The Kentucky Derby Super Screener is now available and includes analysis of each horse as well as groupings of rankings ranging from contenders to top longshots to tosses. There is also a full page of wagering strategy that builds tickets using each of Shutty's key opinions.
