Super Screener: Build around this Wood Memorial longshot
The combination of trainer Jason Servis and owners Gary and Mary West will for the second straight week enter a major Kentucky Derby prep with a colt who has never gone two turns but shows promising lower-level performances.
Last time, Horse Racing Nation's Super Screener handicapping system identified Maximum Security as the Florida Derby (G1) contender to beat should Hidden Scroll not send from the gate. That worked out.
Mike Shutty, author of the Super Screener, considers Final Jeopardy to be "a very interesting longshot" who "will offer more than a fair price." His approach uses data-driven analysis to handicap top stakes races each weekend. What's available here is a small sample of Shutty's work, with the full product including analysis of other major races on a blockbuster Saturday.
Final Jeopardy could be the hit of the afternoon if he comes in at or near his 8-1 morning line billing.
"The barn has alway been high on this late developer, who is getting good at the right time," Shutty said.
Final Jeopardy won easily Dec. 9 on debut at Gulfstream Park before coming up short next time in the Limehouse Stakes, a six-furlong sprint. Given two months between races, he returned to deliver another victory March 3 in the type of allowance optional claiming event at Gulfstream that produces Derby contenders.
"While he has yet to go two turns, that effort last out in the one-turn mile at Gulfstream Park 60 days off the layoff was super strong," Shutty said. "Final Jeopardy laid out 90-plus Brisnet Pace/Speed figures in all four slots. That performance combined with stamina breeding indicates that he’ll relish the added ground here."
Shutty considers Final Jeopardy one of three "A" horses, or contenders to put atop your multi-race wagers, in the Wood. Unlike stablemate Maximum Security last week, he figures to stalk the pace rather than take part of it.
"Form cycle analysis concludes that a major move forward off that last effort can be expected," Shutty said. "He faces tougher but is up for the task. Pace setup couldn’t be any better for this colt that lays out energy in that desired balanced way."
With three other Wood Memorial contenders entering off Derby prep wins, who else should you use on tickets? Shutty goes horse-by-horse for each race analysis, then suggests wagers. So join in to get the Super Screener advantage today!
